CHAPTER 23

For the second time in forty-eight hours, Addy had found herself stuck on a rooftop as hostile forces took aim at her friends. This time, she at least had one advantage: they didn’t know she was here.

No less than a minute after her instincts had told her to take cover, a trooper had emerged onto the roof to assume a sniper position. It wasn’t hard to conceal herself until they had set up their perch – in precisely the place that she herself had chosen, of course – then sneak back over and incapacitate him with his own KO gun, set to maximum power at point-blank range.

I’m guessing he’s going to leave that part out of the report, she thought as she rolled him away from his rifle and settled down in his stead.

Standard law enforcement issue: Marks & Gray, short-range, variable ammunition. She pressed her eye to the scope and tapped the ammo selector then sucked in a breath through her teeth. They’ve got this thing on live rounds? What the hell? Most of the time, law enforcement was strictly required to deploy less-lethal weaponry, like shock-gel rounds or concussion weapons.

Then again, these people weren’t really law enforcement, were they? More of those CID goons who had ‘special authorization’ from the Commonwealth Executive in the aftermath of the Oluo Plaza bombing. It seemed intelligence agencies operating domestically wasn’t the only norm that had been suspended.

She peered through the scope at the scene in front of her: a few squads of similarly geared operatives were making their way down both ends of the street, enclosing the bookstore in a standard box pattern.

They weren’t the only ones, either. Sitting back from the rifle, she checked the other rooftops near her position and picked out another sharpshooter silhouetted against the skyline, about half a block down. Their vantage gave them a view into the alley at the side of the shop and, as she watched, they lined up a shot.

Shit. I don’t have an angle on him.

Addy pressed her eye back to the scope, swinging it towards the alley, where she could just see an open bulkhead and several familiar figures emerging: Tapper, ushering along Kovalic, who was carrying a sidearm and stumbling, followed by Brody. She felt an unconscious sigh of relief issue from her lungs as she saw that the pilot was unharmed. Behind him came the tall figure of Aaron Page, who was slamming the bulkhead closed and jamming something in the latch.

An iridescent light danced around the man’s torso as the other sniper took aim. Infrared targeting dot. That meant it would only be visible to someone looking through a targeting scope – like Addy.

Her finger whispered over the trigger. The mission was to protect her team. That’s what the general had told her, and it seemed clear that their association with Page had gotten them into hot water: there were multiple squads of troops trying to apprehend them, and the
